THE BEST CAREER YOU CAN EVER PURSUE IN LIFE (FOR ADULTS AND ASPIRING CAREER INDIVIDUAL)

Growing up a as a child, I had people ask me questions like “when you grow up, what would you like to become”? This same question goes for any other child who has a quest to grow up as an adult and be ready to face all the responsibilities that come with being an adult.

As young children, many of us had the privilege to attend primary schools and then proceed to secondary schools. However, some get lucky to get admission into tertiary institutions while others aren’t lucky. But for those who are not lucky, they would often find themselves either as apprentice, paid jobs with meager income or other forms of business venture or skill acquisition programs. Not everyone in this category ever gets to live a life of fortune (in fact, only a few might succeed).

For the category that gain admission to tertiary institutions, they would have to spend a minimum of four (4) years determined by the course of study. Courses like medical science would often take seven (7) years to complete, which are all normal course during the academic career. But this is not a normal course in an environment like Nigeria where a four-year course would be completed between seven to nine years. Very frustrating indeed!

For instance, I know a friend who spent seven (7) years pursuing a 4-year course; and sometimes after the university education, we desire that (either by stroke of luck or compensation for knowledge acquisition from the tertiary institution), you will find a very good job with mouth-watery pay package; but this is far-fetched for so many people as our expectations do not actually reflect the economic realities that we face. This is accounted for by a friend of mine, after spending 7 years to study a four-year course, proceeded to acquire an MBA.

Thereafter, he took a leap into the labour market and do you know what he got? A paid job with a monthly salary of N50,000. Oh! He must have thought: “Nine wasted years should have been used to start a business”. You might say, “ so I am against going to school”? No! No! No! in fact going to school is good but it should never be your life-long goal!

What about me that did not completed my tertiary education? I had to drop out because of lack of funds and thereafter got a paid job with meager income. However, I pursue another alternative and acquired a professional qualification in accountancy. But I did not stop at my paper qualification! I developed my skills! Even though some companies did not employ me because I had no university degree, it is interesting to know that I had worked in trading, manufacturing, commercial banking, investment banking, oil and gas etc. Also, I have facilitated trainings on financial modeling; accounting software etc. but all these I am saying about myself is not the intent of this article.

Now, let us go back to the subject matter, in pursuing your life long career, there is one myth which is widely held but I am going to debunk and that is

"HAVING AN EMPLOYMENT AS YOUR LIFE-LONG GOAL IS THE WORST THING THAT CAN EVER HAPPEN TO AN INDIVIDUAL”
